Lightweight Style for Small Screen Devices (cell phone, iphone, mobile, android)
Mod Version: 1.0.3, by dartho (Coder/Designer) dartho is offline
Developer Last Online: Aug 2020 I like it Show Printable Version Email this Page

vB Version: 4.1.8 Rating: (98 votes - 4.82 average) Installs: 895
Released: 25 Aug 2010 Last Update: 16 Dec 2011 Downloads: 6248
Not Supported Re-usable Code

A lightweight *forum only style aimed at small screen devices such as Windows Smartphones, Nokias and even iPhones. It has VERY low bandwidth requirements - 15 times less on my site - 20K as opposed to 300K for forumhome.

*forum only - I have done a very small amount of rough work on CMS templates, a simple single column CMS *could* be created to work with this style without too much effort. However I am not sure if you can have a different CMS layout dependent on which style you are using?

This is an update to the mobile style I have previously released.

The changes are predominantly aesthetic to take advantage of larger screens.

It is also much easier to change colour schemes by editing the commented CSS file.

Demo: http://vbdev.org/forum.php?styleid=7

This is a a lightweight style and as such has much reduced functionality/information over the default vBulletin style.

Install instructions:
  • Firstly, if upgrading, I recommend installing this as a new style rather than overwriting your previous install. This way you get to test it first without trashing your existing style.
  • BACKUP YOUR EXISTING lightweight.css.php FILE IF YOU HAVE CSS CUSTOMISATIONS
  • Download ZIP file
  • Unzip to a local/temp directory
  • Edit lightweight.css.php file to customise colours if required
  • Upload contents of the upload directory in the zip file folder to your forum root.
  • Install style XML via Style Manager in your ADMINCP
  • **Install and configure "LightWeight Style Options"
  • See post 2 for a FAQ
  • Click "Mark as Installed"
  • Test it out
  • Leave a rating
  • Leave feedback
  • Enjoy checking your site from your mobile phone without the need to pinch/zoom/wait etc...
Version Control:
1.0.0 - 25 AUG 2010 - Initial Release on vBulletin.org
1.0.1 - 26 AUG 2010 - Fixed "Mark All Forums Read" link in Search results. Released Lightweight Style Options to customise this
1.0.2 - 21 MAR 2011 - Updated to 4.1.2, removed short tags from CSS, fixed some issues discovered since last release, added some stuff.
1.0.3 - 16 DEC 2011 - Updated to 1.0.3, tried to fix all known issues. Nothing new. If you have updated your site as bugs have been found, probably no need to upgrade. But if you're upgrading your site from to 4.1.9, might be worthwhile.
1.0.3a - 16 DEC 2011 - remove test ad hook code accidently left in postbit_legacy template
Branding Free:
The style is free to use. However I ask that you keep links in the footer. If you want to remove them - send me a donation of an amount you can afford, or that you think is fair/reasonable, it's up to you how much.

Dartho, if you have the time and inclination, it would be amazing if you could have a look at adding this thanks hack for vb4 ... http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=243510

Integrating Abe1's post thanks add-on into the lightweight style.

replace the following templates with the code provided (in the lightweight style only!!)
post_thanks_box

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

post_thanks_button

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

post_thanks_postbit

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

Edit both the postbit & postbit_legacy templates as follows

Search for:

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

Add the following immediately above:

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

Then go to end of template and paste in:

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

and your done!

Just noticed something else with the style in general - my last update only included updates to the postbit_legacy template which should have been made to both postbit and postbit_legacy (they are meant to be identical). I suggest overwriting the postbit template copying with the contents of the postbit_legacy template.

You could just delete the contents of that template in the lightweight style to stop it showing, same should work for most other add-ons that start appearing because of the addition of hooks.

BTW - I modified the code for the post_thanks_box template above so that it only shows the post thanks box when someone has actually posted thanks

Alternatively if you wanted to integrate the post thanks hack, and not put the hooks in, you can put the code from post_thanks_box in place of {vb:raw template_hook.postbit_end} in the postbit templates and put the code from post_thanks_button in place of {vb:raw template_hook.postbit_controls}

if you add the contents from post_thanks_button in place of {vb:raw template_hook.postbit_controls}
the button shows up on everyone ..
If you have it set so you can thank yourself it is showing
then if clicked you get the you don't have permission to do this act or what ever it says.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated

this custom style based on your work, is very very nice....
To remove underlines and make style changes etc, edit the CSS file. To remove underlines form ALL linkes, edit the lightweight.css.php file, search for

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

and add

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

immediately above it.

I have tried to leave the style as simple as possible, whilst still being functional, to make it easy for admins to tailor it for their site as Mark has done.

Ah - I didn't think oif permissiosn etc....

try wrapping the following conditional around it:

<vb:if condition="$display_thanks_image=='none'">

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

</vb:if>

Well bro, I made the thanks work. But user has to press the button 2/3 times and refresh the page. Because I am using hide option integrated with Abe1's thanks hack, in normal version once user press thank, the hidden content automatically show without refreshing the page but in mobile version it needs to refresh and press thanks more times. Can I make it ajax based or if I can change anything which will make it automatically and user will get rid of pressing the button every time or refresh the page.

Thank you.

I don't know what the hide option is, the above code seems to work fine from my mobile phone.

Hello dartho

I have just upgraded to vb4 4.1.11

In order to avoid the moaning in control panel about templates, I deleted the lightweight style, upgraded to 4.1.11 and then uploaded the lightweight style and the options add on.

Thing is, it doesn't look anything like what it did before. Gone is the desktop button at the top, adding a title to the options doesn't remove the logo, and the logo is vbulletin not your mobile logo.

What on earth did I do wrong? Or is it 4.1.11 doing something?

Uploaded again and this time it worked... seems that what I was looking at was the vb4 version... not as nice as yours.
